Building an entire wedding movie around sex jokes, but adds in some well-timed honest family drama

Rating: 6/10

"The Big Wedding" seems to be following in the footsteps of the recent
Hollywood romantic comedies – gather as many big name stars as you can
and put them all in a romantic comedy storyline. It's the best of the
bunch, even though that's not saying anything at all. It's also based
on a French film "Mon frère se marie", and that's not really saying all
that much either.

Any description of the plot is just going to read as a listing of who's
who of Hollywood. But let's do it anyways: We have the patriarch and
matriarchs (Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon); we
have the up-and-comers excited for their big day (Ben Barnes and Amanda
Seyfried); and then we have the middle siblings who have had their time
in the spotlight and are starting to fade away (Topher Grace and
Katherine Heigl).

The wedding revolves around lies (obviously) and religion – with Robin
Williams as the drunken Catholic priest. And it also includes lots and
lots of sex jokes. The surprising thing that audiences are taking away
from this film, especially in spite of the decidedly negative critics'
responses, is that it is hilarious. Fans of the film will find
themselves laughing from beginning to end. But to give you fair
warning, all of the jokes are sexually-based, and I mean all of them.

Laughing at the Catholic stigma of don't have sex but if you do, don't
be safe; laughing at people who have too much sex; laughing at people
who don't have sex; and worse of all, laughing at divorced and married
couples who have sex with one another. While some of the jokes were
funny, they're also responsible for creating the uneasy dynamic amongst
the characters – all of whom are family (or, at least, are about to
become in-laws). At times the film crosses the line from funny
dysfunctional family to repulsive dysfunctional family.

The one line that "The Big Wedding" straddles well is that between
comedy and drama. The film is effective when it moves from funny jokes
to touching family honesty and back to some more funny jokes. The story
lines are very predictable, and sometimes the jokes are too simple and
too wrong, but it tries to add in the right amount of drama, and
ultimately, it should be entertaining to fans of the genre.

A BLACK Comedy That Doesn't Suck

Rating: 7/10

I was one of the few who probably expected a bit too much from this
film but I wasn't disappointed as many were. The plot for the film
wasn't anything to brag about and it's formulaic execution doesn't seem
to tired out as the trailer depicts. The main element this movie has
going for it are the numerous memorable moments, long after I exited
the theater I kept playing all of the outrageously funny scenes in my
head and trust me there were many, mostly near the conclusion. A real
challenge I will put onto you is trying to find an unlikable character,
surprisingly every single character is well rounded and has their own
personally attractive "persona." It is at times rather mature
sometimes, it's uncalled for sometimes and the blend between the
maturity and silly antics really work together. Performance wise, Craig
Robinson played his role with his every ounce of charisma and David
Allen Grier is always entertaining in mostly anything he's involved in.
Overall, this is a great and light comedy that is an amazing treat to
bring your mother to for Mother's Day.

They climb the tree and into the boat only to find fresh bread and fresh footprints. Realizing that they are not the only ones who have discovered the treehouse boat, they decide to leave. And what a shame this movie didn't get the Golden Palm!!!

I don't want to spoil this movie, but I can just say it's a rare and
beautiful movie about love, friendship, nature and wildness. Very
sensitive, touching.

The cast is great, Reese Whiterspoon, Matthew McConaughey, and the two

Great photography too, with great shots of the Mississippi (among

I'm looking forward to see Jeff Nichols' next project!

A memorable sci-fi fantasy world with a human heart at its core.

Rating: 8/10

If there is a soul, it is made from the love we share.

There are many ways to describe Oblivion, but the softly spoken
afterword by Tom Cruise's character really makes you feel the human
heartbeat of this sci-fi epic.

As always, the trailer is full of explosions and set pieces. Oblivion
the movie is an entirely different beast that values a human story and
characters that are driven by common purpose. While the cast is tiny, I
found much to enjoy from Cruise, Riseborough, Freeman and that Nordic
guy from Headhunters who is showing up more frequently in Hollywood
blockbusters. Aside from unusually limited screen-time, Morgan and
other supporting cast are effective and memorable.

The threads of the plot are well-woven and I won't give anything away,
so what I will tell you is to prepare for a powerful journey into the
unknown where nothing is what it seems. Explosive set pieces take a
backseat for sci-fi philosophy with twists to spare.

Oblivion ticks all the boxes for correct use of literary devices and
establishes enough original cannon to stick in your mind long after the
credits start rolling. It is a distinct success among the largely
abysmal offerings of 2013 so far, don't miss it.

Excellent movie for the whole family to enjoy!

Rating: 10/10

I saw this movie at a sneak preview this afternoon. This was a very
enjoyable movie for our whole family. Me and my husband sat there and
laughed frequently, being completely enthralled with the story and
graphics. Meanwhile, my daughter and my 7 year-old grandson sat with
us, and they also were laughing throughout most of the movie. It has
something for people of all ages to enjoy. It was heartwarming, and at
times, it totally pulls on your heartstrings, too. The characters were
appealing, and the type you find yourself rooting for as time goes by,
and the animals that interact with the humans frequently stole the
show! I know that some critics will have issues with some of the
fantastic creatures that are seen, and they may take issue with the
extraordinary things that The Croods are able to do physically. I knew
going into this movie that this movie was a work of fiction, though,
and therefore I was able to suspend my expectations of reality, and go
on the ride that Dreamworks wanted to take me on. I thoroughly enjoyed
myself, and took this movie for what it was – a lighthearted comedy
about a family going through changes, and how they deal with those
changes. I would definitely recommend this as a great movie to see!!

Of muscles and mad men

Rating: 6/10

Michael Bay's "Pain and Gain" is a very bleak, very dark comedy about
three knucklehead bodybuilders in pursuit of their own American dream,
even if the road there is paved with sex, drugs, torture, humiliation,
and even murder.

Bay is shamelessly reputed for huge explosions, choppy editing,
excessively flashy/glitzy cinematography, sexy women, fancy cars and
(recently) giant robots. With "Pain and Gain" he returns to low-budget
territory since his debut "Bad Boys" in 1995. The result – the film is
a debauchery in style – it's all over the film. Although Bay cuts back
on the explosions and robots (mercifully), everything else has Bay
written all over it, and considering how morbidly ridiculous the film's
subject matter is, Bay tackles it in such a head-on and energetic
manner that the audience is whisked off for the insane ride ahead.

For this movie, he has assembled together Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson
and Anthony Mackie as the three bumble-heads who have their hearts set
in the right goal but clearly lack the intellect to do so. All three
men look jacked up, and play their parts as ridiculous as the part goes
for it, especially Johnson, who clearly is having a blast showing off a
completely different side of him as opposed to what we've been seeing
him of late. Wahlberg plays a character so dangerously goofy and dumb
one will wonder whether such a person exists in real life. Tony
Shalhoub's unfortunate but still jerk-ish character sets the tone for
most of the movie as his predicament grows from one spectrum of
ridiculousness to another. By the time we've reached sexy Bar Paly's
and hilarious Rebel Wilson's love interest characters, the audience
have probably seen enough.

Then in comes Ed Harris as Detective Du Bois. Just when I thought the
film was about to careen off the rails into insanity. He's the only
sane person in the whole movie, and his presence helps bring balance
and clarity to what was a ludicrous first half.

Comic relief is key in Bay's action films, but here he's going all out
at comedy, and he sure does pull of the stops. The film is simply put,
hysterical. The fact that it was indeed a true story makes it all the
more hilarious to watch, who honestly can think of some story like this
and pull if off straight?

I am aware that since this is a film, some liberties had to be made to
the story and characters. Some scenes were undoubtedly exaggerated, but
which one? Every scene looked and felt so surreal, every major
character ridiculous, every line of dialogue inducing a chortle from
the audience. But it was a dementedly fun ride, and Bay, after making
two bloated sequels about giant robots, finally returns to his stride.

An intriguing story re-told again with attention to mystery. 8/10

Rating: 8/10

8/10.

I know a lot of the other reviewers will compare this film to the older
one and also the book, so if you're interested in a comparison, stop
reading here. I want to review this film as a movie that tells a story,
like every other film. I don't want to review this as a film that tried
to beat its preceding film adaptation.

I myself have read the book and have always been so intrigued with the
character of Gatsby, and when I heard a few years back that he would be
portrayed on the big screen by DiCaprio, I couldn't wait. The character
carries such a mystery about him that was delivered so excellently by
Leonardo DiCaprio, and made it so fun to watch. It was almost like I
didn't know what the ending was because I was so immersed in 1920s New
York, and in the lifestyle of The Great Gatsby.

The film itself, as a film, was awesome! The visuals and soundtrack
were captivating and lavish. The acting was great overall, as you can
trust these actors to deliver.

I read somewhere on IMDb (message board or another reviewer, I can't
remember) that Leonardo wasn't a good fit for the role of Gatsby. I
think this statement couldn't be more wrong. If you have read the book,
you must have some idea about the depth of Gatsby's character, the
depth of his mind, his desires. The false smiles, the phony handshakes,
the uneasiness in being in public, the way Jay Gatsby conducts himself
in front of Daisy, and in pursuit of her. All these things are
delivered so well by DiCaprio. His nerve, his frustration, his
determination…all so eloquently portrayed. But most of all, his
passion, and as Nick Carraway, our narrator so emphatically reminds us,
his hope. The character development of Jay Gatsby, and the development
of all those surrounding him gives us such a deep look at the
relationships of such a diverse category of people.

The storyline is obviously interesting: A man realizes his new neighbor
is a mysterious, and incredibly wealthy man. Like how awesome is that?
Throughout the whole film, as the relationships between all the few
main characters become deeper and deeper, and the questions become
answered, you just can't help but feel so into the characters' lives.
Great writing for the characters, great directing, great great great
acting.

Overall, this is just a great film. If you go into the theater thinking
"oh this'll suck compared to Robert Redford" or "I bet the book is way
better", you're setting yourself up for a bad 143 minutes. Don't be so
close minded and try to view it as just another film that tells a
fictional story, and a great one at that.

Should have been better

Rating: 5/10

This was released yesterday in New Zealand and after the Avengers i was
really looking forward to the so called "phase 2" of movies about our
favourite superheroes starting with Ironman 3. Unfortunately for me
this movie took a backward step. It was fairly slow but it also did
have plenty of action. The story was simple, all the special effects
were fantastic and RDJ did his thing again owning the screen as IM. The
downside for me was the vulnerability of IM and the lame enemies. I
thought that it was great that Tony Stark was pushed to his limits but
would have been better against a different foe, someone challenging on
the technical side maybe. Instead we have some people that can
annoyingly rejuvinate over and over again. They reminded me of the ugly
vampire people on Blade 2. And the biggest downer was how easily IM's
suit was trashed. My daughter asked me after leaving the cinema "how
come ironmans suit keep breaking so easily?" And shes right. The lame
bad guys seemed to overpower ironman quite easily and the amount of
suits that were ripped to shreds left me wondering, are they made of
plastic now? Considering the types of opponents hes come up against in
previous movies IM 1, IM 2 and Thor and all the aliens in Avengers, its
quite a shock to see the suit torn apart like that. It just didn't make
sense. We all love Tony Starks Ironman suit and all the little gizmos
in all the previous movies but unfortunately this time around, the
Ironman suit wasn't that Iron at all:(

Watch it and ignore the critics!

Rating: 10/10

We watched ' Star Trek – Into the Darkness this afternoon (May 9th
2013).

I am not going to reveal specific details because this film is so new
that I am aware that many people still have not had the opportunity to
watch it, and I do not wish to ruin their experience.

Having read the points raised in the 'maddog' review I just wanted to
say that we found it to be a truly absorbing and brilliant film, and
our views are so diametrically opposed to 'maddog' that I genuinely
wonder if he/or she actually watched the same film – or slept through
it and took a wild guess as to its quality.

Star Trek – Into the Darkness is mainly a fast paced action film
interspersed with scenes of human interest which facilitates the deeper
development of the main characters and their inter-relationships. The
phrase 'bonding under fire seems appropriate.

I would urge people not to be dissuaded from watching this film because
a reviewer cannot see the link between Gene Roddenberry's much vaunted
ideals and therefore trashes J.J. Abrams work. Let me just say that as
I am in my 66th year, I have watched ALL the Star Trek series and films
and can advise that this film combines a serious reflection of William
Shatner's portrayal of James T. Kirk but also matures Chris Pine as the
film progresses. As Roddenberry was closely involved with original Star
Trek series I therefore believe that he would approve the direction
that Abrams is taking the latest incarnation of Star Trek.

Star Trek – Into the Darkness is aptly named. It is rich in plot detail
and exciting to watch. It will have many people sitting on the edge of
their seats, willing those embroiled in battle to succeed. Even the
villain (stunningly portrayed by Benedict Cumberpatch) warrants a
certain amount of sympathy from all fair minded people.

My advice – Go, Watch – and be thrilled by a brilliant film. We will go
and see it again!!

Our thanks to all those involved in bringing this to our screen – great
job!
